Getting started

What Current is, the parts of the workspace, and the core loop from import to export.

On this page

Current is a native video and motion editor for Windows x64. You edit footage, text, shapes and motion on a timeline, and an external agent can edit the same project through the same checked operations. There is no installer or public release yet.

The workspace

  • Title strip: menus (File, Edit, View, Help), Undo, Redo, the project name and save state, Save and Export.
  • Rail on the left: Media (with Media, Audio and Fonts tabs), Layers and Motion library. At the bottom: Connections, Settings and Appearance.
  • Viewer in the middle, with a footer that holds the canvas tools, Align, Fit, canvas zoom and clean fullscreen preview.
  • Properties on the right. With nothing selected, it shows a read-only summary of the composition and project.
  • Transport strip: timecode, frame stepping, play, preview quality (Half or Full) and monitor volume.
  • Timeline and Activity at the bottom. Activity has three tabs: Needs review, Problems and History.

Open or create a project

  • File > New project starts an empty project. The editor also opens an empty project when it starts without arguments.
  • File > Open project… (Ctrl+O) opens a project file.
  • File > Save project (Ctrl+S) saves it, and File > Save project as… saves to a new file.
  • File > Recover last autosave opens the recovery copy the editor writes after each change.

A new project’s root composition is 1920 by 1080 at 30 fps, with four tracks: Titles, Graphics and Footage (visual) and Audio (audio). Concepts explains projects, compositions and tracks.

The editor keeps recovery files, export snapshots and job files in a folder of its own inside the working folder, so the working folder must be writable.

From the command line

  • --project <path> opens a project file.
  • --frame <n> sets the starting playhead frame.

The core loop

  1. Import. File > Import media / font… imports a file into the project. You can also drop files into the Media panel, or onto the timeline to import and place them in one step (up to 32 files at once). Current accepts MP4 (H.264) video, WAV audio, PNG images and TTF or OTF fonts; see Assets for the exact formats.
  2. Place and edit. Drag an image or video from Media onto the canvas or a timeline row. On the timeline, drag clips to move them, drag an edge to trim, press Ctrl+B to split at the playhead and Ctrl+D to duplicate. The text tool and shape tool in the viewer footer add text and shapes at the playhead. See Editing.
  3. Animate. Add keys at the playhead from Properties for position, scale, rotation or opacity, and double-click a key to set its value and interpolation. Motion treatments in Properties (Fade in, Fade out, Fade in + out, Slide from left and Wipe reveal) write ordinary keyframes for you. See Keyframes.
  4. Add effects. Properties > Local effects adds Gaussian blur, Drop shadow, Glow and Organic reveal, and sets the blend mode. See Effects.
  5. Preview. Space plays or pauses. Preview: Half / Full sets the preview frame size, and clean fullscreen preview is in the viewer footer.
  6. Export. Choose Export in the title strip. Current writes an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. See Export.

Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y undo and redo, including accepted agent edits.

Preview

Preview runs on the CPU by default. A direct GPU preview path is available as a separate build. On very complex full-resolution scenes, CPU preview can show fewer than 30 frames per second; audio keeps its normal speed rather than slowing down to match.

Where to go next

  • Concepts: projects, assets, compositions, tracks, clips, keyframes and history.
  • Editing: the editing flows in the workspace and their shortcuts.
  • Effects: the four built-in effects and motion blur, with every control.
  • Export: export settings, encoders and safety checks.
  • Agents and MCP: connecting an AI agent and how its edits are checked.
  • Current status: what is in the build today and what is not built yet.
